The Pull That Never Lets Go
Episode sixty-four named the holding that keeps the three pieces together inside each heavy kind, weighed it, and kept its feel shut. Tonight Qubit opens it, and it does something no other pull does. Every pull Vega knows fades with distance: a magnet lets go of a pin a hand away. This one does not. Close together the three pieces hardly notice it and move about almost freely, like dogs on long leads in a small garden; pull one away and the lead goes tight, and after that the grip never fades, so every step away costs the same again. The grip is about a pair of grown elephants hanging from something far too small to see, and that is rounded down. A little of the same holding keeps the middle of every atom together, and the Sun shines because deep inside it this holding lets go a little. And the best trick on the ladder: pull hard enough and the band does not snap, it makes two brand new pieces, so each end gets a new partner, no piece is ever left alone, and nobody has ever caught one on its own. She raises her own hand and learns that the pull that never lets go is why her hand cannot be pulled apart one piece at a time.
