Could We Go There?

The Season 4 finale, and the close of the first going season. Nothing new is taught tonight. Vega arrives having decided she wants the whole answer, and she asks the season’s title question straight out inside the first minute — and Qubit does not dodge it, because three refusals in a row were deliberate and they end here. The whole season is gathered instead, one line and one image per night: the wall, the engines, and the crossing. Laid side by side they turn out to be the same thing wearing different clothes, because the distance never moved and the engine was never the enemy. Time was, and every honest answer this season found was a different way of paying for it. So the answer comes in two parts, because a made thing and a person are genuinely not the same question. A made thing can almost certainly cross, given a decision and a very long patience, and something of ours has already gone. A person crossing is a real open question, held in pale pencil, shading toward the blank page. And the honest word for when is not soon, and most likely not us. But the first small steps are not a proposal, because they are already flying: the oldest traveller still answers when we call and may yet have one of its switched-off senses handed back, and a real sail, thinner than a hair and wider than a swimming bath, was finished this very year. Then the homecoming, earned rather than announced: somebody out there, someday, turns round and finds our own Sun sitting in a stranger’s sky as one more ordinary star at the end of a small crooked pattern.
